Self-portrait as an artist
The objects I produce lap into the fields of design and photography as well as fine arts. To understand the way I work it is important to choose the right angle of view based on the knowledge.
One of my main interests concentrates on the functionality of things: do they function, do they appear to function or don’t they function at all?
Every object I make plays with its „function“, with its collective prestigious and ritual value, with questions of (male) honour and status which seem important to society.
I find much of my visual inspiration in print media. I use some of this commercial material for photographs in combination with people and my own objects, which in fact I reflect as an extention of the human ego. This subtle combination is sometimes difficult for the viewer to understand considering the different visual sources and its content. It has sometimes lead to misunderstandings. Therefore I concided to give a little help by writing short texts interpreting the shown objects.
Advertisement today offers such a perfect visual world to which the eye has gotten used to, in which people stage themselves so glamorously for the public view. To me as an artist it seems a logic consequence to use this kind of commercial entertainment in the field of fine arts too.
Eventually I developed a new project named „Götz Bury’s Dream Factory“. My „Dream Factory“ is a studio for photography in which visitors can choose from a variety of welded and painted objects such as microphones, and weapons, which are all copied from images found in news papers and magazines.
Visitors can then stage themselves in front of painted backgrounds of their choice: a palace, the beautiful beach, the trophy room, etc., and they can thus be photographed as stereotype hollywood stars, as beauty queens, presidents, or body builders, but they can also stage themselves „free style“ and make fun of the one dimensional commercial world. Each photography can then be taken home.
I first startet with the „Dream Factory“ in the year 2002 during an art festival called „SOHO IN OTTAKRING“, which takes place every year in Vienna in the area where my studio is located.
In the mean time I have become mobile with my „Dream Factory“, and I install my studio at events and openings of museums and Galleries. I choose some of the photographs as a basis for installations and lighting objects.
