KICK THE HABIT / PFEIF DRAUF! Ventil Rassismus / Racism as a Vent
Im politisch heißen Wahljahr 2010 untersucht das Kunstprojekt SOHO IN OTTAKRING in kritischer Weise eine weit verbreitete „schlechte Angewohnheit": das Denken in rassistischen Schemen.
In 2010, SOHO IN OTTAKRING focuses on a ‘bad habit' that is widespread around the world: thinking in racist patterns. SOHO 12 will approach this field and its problems from two sides:
Die anhaltende Krisenstimmung und steigende Arbeitslosigkeit verstärken offensichtlich die in Wien latent vorhandene Angst vor allem, was als „fremd" empfunden wird. Auch viele zugewanderte WienerInnen sind nicht frei von Rassismen. Daher ist es Zeit für eine sozialhygienische Kampagne: Kick the Habit / Pfeiff auf Rassismus!
Wie konnte es dazu kommen, dass rassistische Politik immer öfter als Mittel zur Lösung gesellschaftlicher Probleme akzeptiert wird? Rassismus manifestiert sich auf vielen Ebenen und steht in einer langen historischen Tradition: strukturell, ökonomisch, sprachlich, medial und im sozialen Alltag. In Folge der massiven politischen und ökonomischen Veränderungen der letzten 20 Jahre veränderte sich auch die „Qualität" der rassistischen Argumentationen. Der Begriff Kultur rückt in den Vordergrund, das Bewusstsein für verdeckte Klassenkonflikte ist aus den öffentlichen Debatten verschwunden.
Laut Umfragen sehen die meisten ÖsterreicherInnen das Thema Migration ganz anders als dies in unserem Projektteam und bei vielen KünstlerInnen und Intellektuellen der Fall ist. Eine deutliche Mehrheit der Wahlberechtigten lehnt ZuwandererInnen ab, will den aktuellen Zuzug stoppen und den der vergangenen vierzig Jahre am liebsten rückgängig machen. Diese Haltung schlägt sich seit den späten 1980er Jahren bundesweit auch in Wahlergebnissen und politischen Strategien nieder. Wer damit argumentierte, dass „die AusländerInnen" immer an unserer jeweiligen Misere schuld sind, konnte viele Wählerstimmen gewinnen. Diese Politik wurde, mehr oder weniger offen, rassistisch begründet.
Der Vorwurf an uns, die wir Rassismus ablehnen, lautet, wir würden aus ideologischer Verblendung die mit der Zuwanderung verbundenen Probleme nicht wahrnehmen. Zudem kämen wir mit MigrantInnen ohnehin kaum in Kontakt, also auch nicht in Konkurrenz (um den Job, den Gehsteig, den Fußballkäfig usw.). Abgesehen davon, ob dieser Vorwurf nun berechtigt ist, weist er immerhin auf die unseres Erachtens wesentlichen, nämlich ökonomischen/sozialen, Hintergründe der vorhandenen Probleme hin. Statt diese mit einer entsprechenden sozial- und wirtschaftspolitischen Antwort zu behandeln, setzt sich eine ausgrenzende und rassistische Politik in der Metamorphose als „Sicherheitspolitik" immer mehr auch im politischen Mainstream durch.
Zugleich ergibt sich ein scheinbar unauflösliches Problem: die „aufgeklärten Kräfte" meinen dem „gemeinen Volk" die Augen öffnen zu müssen - und umgekehrt. Solche pädagogischen Versuche scheitern naturgemäß. Viele künstlerische Arbeiten, die sich mit Rassismus beschäftigen, tendieren - was die politische Wirksamkeit betrifft - zur Selbstaffimierung. „Preaching to the converted" nennt man dieses Phänomen in den USA. Obwohl das nichts mit der genuin künstlerischen Qualität der Projekte zu tun haben muss, scheint es an der Zeit für einen praktischen Versuch über mögliche neue Formen und, noch weiter gedacht, über Sinn und Ziele „antirassistischer Kunst" zu sein.
SOHO 2010 wird zur Versuchsanordnung für die Frage, ob Kunst politische Wirksamkeit entfalten kann und damit am unvollendeten Projekt Aufklärung weiterarbeitet. Dessen aktuelle Form bedeutet immer auch und vor allem Selbstaufklärung.
Wenn es uns ernst ist mit dem Überschreiten der engen Grenzen des Kunstfeldes, sehen wir vom SOHO Team hier die Chance, einen mehr als überfälligen gesellschaftlichen Diskurs voranzutreiben im Sinne von: KICK THE HABIT!

In einem offenen Laboratorium arbeitet sich ein rund um den in Wien lebenden Künstler und Musiker Stephen Mathewson zusammengestelltes internationales KünstlerInnen-Team durch riesige Mengen von vor Ort gesammeltem als auch mitgebrachtem Material zum Thema Rassismus, welches gesichtet, geordnet, verdaut, bearbeitet, besprochen wird - mit allen Sinnen. Während des Festivalzeitraums entsteht öffentlich und mitverfolgbar eine künstlerische Reaktion, die als Objekt, als Bewegung, als Performance, als Buch oder auch nur als ein einziger Satz seine letztendliche Form finden könnte.

Wenn die Cevapcici und der Leberkäs‘ mit dem Kebab...
eine Kunstaktion + Ausstellung rund ums Essen | Eröffnung 15. Mai, 19.00 | Ausstellung 16.-22. Mai
Leberkäsesemmel, Kebab und Cevapcici koexistieren nun schon ca. 25 Jahre friedlich in der Fastfood-Szene, und vereinen sich in österreichischen und nicht-österreichischen Mägen ohne Bauchweh zu verursachen. Dies ist der Ausgangspunkt einer multilingualen Cartoon-Serie, die auf Deutsch, Serbisch und Türkisch die Abenteuer der drei Protagonisten Cevapcici, Leberkäs‘ und Kebab im Wien des Jahres 2010 erzählt. Diese Geschichten sollen sich in kritischer bis provokanter Form mit dem Thema Alltagsrassismus und Vorurteil auseinandersetzen.
Mit Siebdruck auf folienbeschichtetes Wursteinpackpapier gedruckt, werden sie den im Raum Brunnen- bzw. Yppenmarkt ansässigen Würstel- oder Kebabstand-UnternehmerInnen zum Verpacken ihrer Produkte angeboten. Teilnehmenden: Fleischerei Sterkl, Käsestand AZMI ERSOY, Würstelstand Herr Blaser,Geflügelstand Johann Kicker, ALIS BÖREK, serbischer Stand Bajevic Nebojsa, Balkanika Grill
16.-22. Mai ab 17.00 Uhr im Cafe Müller: Wir drucken mit Siebdruck für 5.- Euro pro Blatt „on demand" vor Ort die gewünschten Cartoons.
Auswärtsspiel - Der Grazer Lendwirbel zu Gast in Ottakring
Ein Vergleich von Stadtteilentwicklung, künstlerischen Interventionen und Möglichkeiten von Partizipation im lokalen Umfeld.
Der 4. Gemeindebezirk Lend erstreckt sich als ehemaliger Gewerbe- und Arbeiterbezirk vom Stadtzentrum bis zum Hauptbahnhof in Graz. Lend hat aktuell etwa 28.000 Einwohner und mit 25% den zweithöchsten Hauptwohnsitzanteil an Nicht-ÖsterreicherInnen in Graz, Tendenz steigend. So treffen im Lend von heute verschiedene Kulturen und Gesellschaften aufeinander. Der seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bestehende Bauernmarkt, Rotlichtetablissements und alte Wirtshäuser stehen neben Kunsthaus, Haus der Architektur oder Kunstvereinen wie dem Medienturm oder Rotor. Neben migrantischem Leben gesellen sich alternative In-Lokale sowie zahlreiche Künstler- und Kreativkollektive mit ihren Büros, Ateliers und Läden. Gemeinsam ist Ihnen allen, dass sie in diesem Bezirk wohnen und/oder arbeiten, also radikal anwesend sind und sich den urbanen Raum teilen. Aus dieser Dichte ist spontan der Lendwirbel als mehrtägiges soziokulturelles Stadtteilfest im Mai entstanden. Die Plätze und Straßen, Ecken und Gassen werden zum temporären Spielplatz der Ideen und Experimente und zum Präsentations-, Kommunikations-, Diskussions- und Entwicklungsraum. Es wird gestaunt und gerockt, gekocht und gebastelt, vorgeführt und ausgestellt und der urbane Lebensraum als Bühne des Lebens zurückerobert. Eine Diskursveranstaltung begleitet diese Transformationsprozesse aktueller Stadtteilentwicklung auf Höhe der Zeit.
Nach dem Heimspiel des Lendwirbels vom 3. - 8.5.2010 in Graz wird eine Auswahl von KünstlerInnen und StadtaktivistInnen zum Auswärtsspiel nach Ottakring fahren. Als Festival im Festival wird Verbindung zu SOHO aufgenommen und können vergleichbare urbane Phänomene besichtigt, diskutiert und gefeiert werden.

One will be a survey of the status quo, a new, report-like examination on racism that will be as open as possible, or put more specifically, it will be an assessment of the different forms of racism. These manifest themselves at many different levels and at the same time they are part of a long, bitter historical tradition: structurally, economically, in language, the media and in everyday social life. The ‘quality' of racist argumentation has changed over the last 20 years as a result of massive political and economic change. ‘Culture' as a term has come to the fore with increasing frequency. Awareness for class conflicts has faded in the pubic debate.
SOHO 12 will itself also be a testing arrangement for the issue of whether art can develop political effectiveness here and now and thus contribute to enlightenment as a project not yet concluded, art whose current form is always primarily synonymous with the search for self-enlightenment: Where and in which form can racism be recognized to begin with? What can be achieved against racism?
Unfortunately surveys show that most Austrians' view of this subject is very different to the view of our project team and those of many artists and intellectuals. A clear majority of those allowed to vote rejects immigrants, want to stop immigration as it stands in the present, and would prefer to reverse the immigration that has taken place over the last 40 years. The election results and political strategies at a national level since the late 1980s reflect this stance. Those parties whose programs can be summarized in a few words that claim the "foreigners" are to blame for the respective misery have gained votes steadily.
The accusation voiced against those like us who reject racism is that we fail to perceive the problems related to immigration due to our ideological blindness. It is also claimed that we never come into contact with migrants anyway, and therefore never have to compete with them (for a job, on the sidewalk, on the playground hardtop, etc.).
Aside from whether this claim is justified, it does nonetheless point towards major aspects in our opinion, these being is the socio-economic background of the existing problems. This notwithstanding, it can be established that the politics of alienation and racism are morphing into ‘ a policy of safety' that is increasingly gaining a foothold in mainstream political life, instead of being met with the necessary social and economic response.
The gap between these opposing ends of the varying perspectives creates a seemingly unsolvable problem: the ‘enlightened forces' feel the need to open the eyes of the ‘common man' - and vice versa. Such pedagogic attempts naturally tend to fail. Many works of art that address this theme tend towards self-affirmation when it comes to their political effectiveness. They are "preaching to the converted" as this phemonenon is called in the USA. Although this may not have anything to do with the quality of the projects, it might be time for a practical attempt with new forms, and taking this a step further, it might be time to consider the purpose and aims of ‘anti-racist' art. What remains is the unqualified rejection of the simplification of socio-political problems into a racist formula. This is about the effort to create new dynamics among the political positions and powerful artistic practice.
Since we are serious about going beyond the narrow borders of the arts, the SOHO 12 team sees a chance of encouraging a long-overdue social discourse and taking it a step further: KICK THE HABIT!

Racism: The basic idea of racism is that some race or the other, mostly one´s own is superior to another and therefore has the right to subordinate the others. However, there are more subtle forms of racism, for example when one wants to avoid bringing "weak blood" into the family when choosing a life partner.
Naturally there are more extreme and more moderate forms of this idea, as is the case with every idea. Thus there are logically specific movements that use a racist idea as their basis.

Brief description of SOHO IN OTTAKRING
SOHO IN OTTAKRING is an art and urban district project that was started in 1999 as part of an artist initiative. It extends across the Brunnenviertel area of Ottakring, Vienna´s 16th district.
The Brunnenviertel is located close to the "Gürtel" a densely developed urban area surrounding the Brunnenmarkt street market. It has an area of c. 20 ha and a population of c. 8000 inhabitants. The percentage of immigrants in the population is 36%. SOHO IN OTTAKRING has contiuously focused on aspects such as urban living, urban development, artistic intervention and possibilities for participation in the local environment as well as the question of participation and co-determination in public life. A key aspect is the cooperation between artists and theoreticians at a national and international level with various local groups and institutions such as the Gebietsbetreuung Ottakring, schools in the area, youth insitutions, businesses and businessmen and residents, as well as the pro-active use of public space during the yearly two-week festival in May.
The variable field created by the different residents and interests in the area in which SOHO takes place creates the grounds - sometimes the cultural media - for artistic work. The breadth of these works is great and ranges from "classical" exhibitions to socio-political projects with a concrete commitment that take up the implications of the area as a model of social problems and put them on centerstage. This artistic practice has been given particular support for some time.The dedication to supporting and strengthening socio-political art projects will continue. The concentration on social problems that can be identified in the area and the current issues is of particular concern.
SOHO IN OTTAKRING also strives to pursue exchanges with projects that have similar aims in other European cities.

In an open laboratory, an international group of artists, in tandem with the Vienna-based artist and musician Stephen Mathewson works through huge piles of materials on racism - collected on site, as well as brought in - viewing, ordering, digesting, editing, discussing it, in manners involving all the senses. During the festival period, these artists create a public and traceable reaction that might find its final form in an object, a performance, a book, or even a single sentence.

When Cevapcici and Meatloaf Meet Kebab
An art project and exhibition on the theme of eating.
Opening: 15 May, 7 p.m. | Exhibition 16 - 22 May
Meatloaves, kebab, and cevapcici have peacefully coexisted on the fast food market for some 25 years, coming together in Austrian and non-Austrian stomachs without causing any disturbance. This is the point of departure of a multi-lingual series of cartoons narrating the adventures of the three protagonists -- Cevapcici, Meat Loaf, and Kebab -- in German, Serbian, and Turkish. The stories address the theme of everyday racism and prejudices in a critical or even provocative fashion. They will be screen-printed on waxed paper and offered to the owners of hotdog and kebab stands in the Brunnen and Yppen market areas as wrapping paper for their products.
16 - 22 May, from 5 p.m. at Cafe Müller. We will provide on-site and on-demand screen-printing of submitted cartoons at a cost of 5 Euros per sheet.

Lendwirbel from Graz as a guest in Ottakring

A comparison of neighborhood planning, artistic interventions, and forms of public participation in a local context.
The Lend district in Graz is a former industrial neighborhood with 28,000 inhabitants, 25% of whom are non-Austrians. It is an area where different cultures and societies meet one another. The 18th century Bauern market, red light joints, and traditional inns are located in close proximity to the Kunsthaus art center, the House of Architecture, and art groups such as Medienturm and Rotor. Migrant life transpires next to the many trendy cafes, as well as the artistic and creative collectives that have their offices, studios, and shops in the neighborhood. The Lendwirbel festival, a multi-day event that takes place in May, sprang from this dense and diverse background. The squares and streets in the neighborhood become a space for presentations, communication, discussions, and projects.Following the Lendwirbel "home game" in Graz (3 - 8 May, 2010), a selection of artists and neighborhood activists will travel to Ottakring for an "away game." A festival within a festival, Lendwirbel will connect with SOHO to view, discuss, and celebrate comparable urban phenomena.
A city-swapping shop, street gallery, live concert, PermaLend + breakfast, Annenviertel News, talks, a symposium, and naturally, Styrian delicacies.
